Spring 2004: Gray Whales ("Las Ballenas Gris")

Bahia Magdalena, Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos, Baja California Sur

This Jan and Feb, I was lucky enough to introduce my new camera to the incredible gray whales. These massive, but gentle, mammals migrate some 7000 miles from Alaska to Baja's shallow and warm bays for birthing every year. Grays gracefully "fluke" with their tails (known as "corazon" for their heart-like shape) and "spy-hop" (seemingly standing with their huge heads sticking straight up out of the water), and their inquisitive calves often approach the tiny boats. Thanks to my friends at Aquendi in Lopez Mateos, this season I was able to spend lots of time on the water and even touched a calf…making it a twice in a lifetime event!
