San Javier Festival (December 2003)
Every December the tiny and remote village of San Francisco Javier de Vigge-Biaundo swells as thousands of people arrive for the festival of the patron saint. The normally empty street (yes, there’s only one!) is lined with vendors, and there are musicians and cowboy hats everywhere. The highlight of the festival was the procession where the statue of San Francisco Javier was taken down from the Misson’s main altar and paraded slowly and carefully down the street. Because I have spent lots of time in San Javier, my friends made sure I knew where to be at what time to get the photos I wanted (mil gracias Memo, Bili y Luis). The entire festival was an experience for all the senses, and I hope my photos help share the atmosphere.
